Healthy Hair Tips

TIPS FOR A HEALTHY HEAD OF HAIR

  • Wash your hair at least once a week. However if your goal is healthy hair, twice a week is recommended.

  • Apply a deep penetrating conditioner and sit under a hair dryer of heat cap for 15 minutes every time you cleanse your hair. African American hair requires a deep conditioning treatment. An instant conditioner will not penetrate the hair shaft.

  • After deep conditioning treatment rinse thoroughly. The apply a :leave-in" conditioner or moisturizer to your hair before drying.

  • Do not blow-dry your hair while it's dripping wet or when you get out of the shower, instead apply a "leave-in" conditioner or moisturizer, gently comb through hair with a large tooth comb, and sit under a hooded dryer to pre-dry or allow hair to air dry until damp. You can also set your hair in plastic rollers, then sit under a hair dryer for 40 to 50 minutes or until the hair is dry.

  • Touch-ups of relaxer should be spaced every 6 to 12 weeks, depending on growth rate of your hair. The relaxer cream should be applied to the new growth and never applied to the ends or scalp.

  • If you must color your hair, only use semi-permanent hair color! All permanent hair color contains some level of peroxide that can damage your hair.

  • Use a moisturizer on your hair at least once a day, or anytime that your hair appears dry. The one thing that African-Americans lack is moisture.Chemically treated hair also lacks moisture. The sun's UV rays, the wind, curling irons, blow dryers, etc. all deplete our hair of moisture.

  • Keep the use of  heated appliances (curling irons, flat irons, blow dryers, etc.) to a bare minimum, not more than twice weekly. If you want curls in your hair, set it in rollers and sit under the dryer for a roller-set.

  • Evaluate your hair for split ends; you should have your ends trimmed when needed. Your hair will look better and will hold curls and styles better.

  • Invest in high quality products; you get what you pay for. Always read the ingredients in products that you or your stylist put on your hair. Avoid products that are drying to your hair, such as alcohol or butane. Avoid silicone and petroleum based products. Limit the use of gels and hair sprays to minimize dryness and breakage.
